What if CBD could help a broad range of disorders and diseases, including Alzheimer’s? An estimated 5.7 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer’s dementia in 2019. This number includes an estimated 5.5 million people age 65 and older and approximately 200,000 individuals under age 65 who have younger-onset Alzheimer’s (1). As of now, there is no cure and the disease causes more deaths than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. A study published in Surgical Neurology International researched the activation of the body’s endocannabinoid system and how it positively impacts pain, autism, PTSD, OCD, epilepsy, schizophrenia, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s diseases, Tourette’s syndrome, anxiety, depression, panic and psychosis (2). The theory is that cannabinoids are potent anti-inflammatories and neuroprotectants for the brain. Cannabidiol (CBD) has possible therapeutic effects over a broad range of neuropsychiatric disorders (3). Findings also indicate that CBD promotes neurogenesis, or the growth and development of neurons to reduce the deterioration of cognitive functions. CBD may also help prevent brain damage from neurodegenerative diseases like ALS and may head off psychotic, anxiety, and depressive-like behaviors. CBD is already known to help promote the development of synapses and the growth of new neurons, which may account for the therapeutic effects (4). These properties suggest that the compound could be therapeutically beneficial for reducing or even inhibiting the cognitive and functional impairment that occurs with Alzheimer’s disease.

The cause of Alzheimer’s remains the object of intense research, along with the effects of CBD on the disease. One of these studies shows two frequently named culprits in the disease are amyloid plaques and inflammation which develops along with the plaques and further hampers brain function (5). The topic of CBD health benefits continues to grow with new CBD and Alzheimer’s research. In recent studies, CBD has been shown to reduce or remove the impact of inflammation, oxygen buildup, and brain cell decline.

While more studies have to be done, these studies are steps in the right direction toward a better understanding of how CBD works and how it can help. Current CBD studies are showing positive results for many different health ailments, including brain health.
